Report: Liverpool in talks over £60m deal for Raphael Varane

Liverpool are in talks for Raphael Varane, according to reports. The Reds are far from the only ones, however.

This comes from the Manchester Evening News. They claim that Manchester United are in talks with Raphael Varane over a potential move this summer.

The report states that Liverpool are doing the same, though.

Real Madrid are open to a sale, given Varane is coming into the final year of his contract. They’d still want £60m to do a deal but it is very possible to sign the World Cup winner this summer.

Now, apparently, there are other clubs talking to the player’s camp. Some are willing to wait a year to get him for nothing, too, which puts a spanner in the works.

But if someone is willing to put up £60m this summer, the potential deal is there.

It’s certainly an interesting one. Varane is a world-class defender and there really aren’t too many of those about these days. If you can afford him, you should get him.

It’s particularly notable for Liverpool, too. They’ve suffered badly from a lack of depth at centre-back this season with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all missing the majority.

While all three will be back for the start of the season, we don’t actually know what shape they’ll be in. After serious injuries, there’s no guarantee they’ll return to their former selves.

And that’s what makes a move for Varane so tempting. Here’s an elite centre-back who would immediately guarantee strength in the position next season. The absolute worst-case should be relying heavily on Varane while the others try to recapture their form.

The best case is a Varane/Van Dijk partnership that would quite undoubtedly be the best in the world.

£60m is a lot of money, though, and we wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool were one of those aiming for a freebie next summer. There’s no doubt, however, that Varane would be as good as it gets in the next transfer window.
