Liverpool will miss out on Tom Heaton to Manchester United, according to reports. The goalkeeper is available for free this summer.

This comes from the Daily Mail. They claim that Liverpool had the chance to sign Tom Heaton on a free transfer.

The Reds are on the lookout for a cheap/free goalkeeper for next season. Adrian is out of contract, leaving them short in the position. Heaton, with an expiring contract of his own, was a definite option, then.

The 35-year-old will leave Aston Villa in the summer and there aren’t really any better options for free. Heaton is vastly experienced at Premier League level, on top of having a few England caps.

Liverpool understandably don’t want to spend on a reserve goalkeeper, meaning they’re shopping in the free transfer market.

Unfortunately, Heaton won’t be moving to Merseyside. Instead, he’s likely to sign for Manchester United – the club he began his career at.

As a result, Liverpool will try to extend Adrian’s deal into next season.

This is hardly an earth-shattering loss but it is an annoying one. Heaton could have been a very good bench option behind Alisson next season.

There are big doubts about Adrian, of course, ever since his display in the 7-2 defeat against Aston Villa. He just doesn’t quite look up to it and that’s a probelm.

Alisson never stays fit for the entire campaign, thus Liverpool need reliable backup. Heaton, with all of his experience, would have been a nice player to try.

There’s no guarantee he’d have been a success but we’d rather have given him a go than Adrian. We can feel quite confident that Adrian isn’t the right fit, after all.

But it looks as though the Spaniard is the best bet as Liverpool try to save money. We can’t really blame them for that – money will be tighter than usual and there are far, far bigger priorities than backup goalkeeper this summer.
