Liverpool can’t lose their interest in Pote now. The young forward is still thriving for Sporting in Liga Nos.
Record claimed a few months ago that Liverpool had interest in Pote (Pedro Goncalves). The 22-year-old had started the season with a bang, scoring for fun as Sporting sat at the top of the league.
We said he’d be a great signing. After all, Pote was proving to be something special – a no.10/winger who could score goals like an out-and-out striker. Liverpool could absolutely find some room for that in their squad.
Fast forward to now and little has changed. Sporting held onto that top spot ever since, winning their first Liga NOS title since 2002 in the process.
Pote did slow down a tad but he’s still scoring goals. In fact, he’s up to 20 in the league after bagging a brace at Benfica on Saturday.
And as the season prepares to end next week, we think Liverpool have to think long and hard about this one.
Liverpool have interest in Pote
It’s no secret that Liverpool could do with a new forward player. Mohamed Salah is the only player to score consistently this season, though Diogo Jota has got a fair share, too.
The alarming thing, though, is that Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino will all be 30 within 18 months. Liverpool desperately need to think about securing their attack for the long-term.
Jota will certainly play his part, given he’s still only 24. But Pote could be an excellent addition in that regard.
He’s versatile enough that Jurgen Klopp could use him wide or in Firmino’s role. The playmaker offers goals, too, which could fix Liverpool’s biggest problem there.
And the fact he’s played a key role in delivering a title at just 22 suggests he can step up. There’s enormous room for growth, here.
Reports in Portugal claim Sporting have to sell someone this summer to balance the books. With that in mind, we think Liverpool should test the waters for Pote.
We’re not sure they’ll find a better option this summer.
