Donyell Malen is after a move in the transfer window, according to reports. Liverpool could give him exactly what he’s after.
This comes from Voetbal International in the Netherlands. They claim that Donyell Malen wants a move away from PSV Eindhoven this summer.
This isn’t him chasing big money, stardom or disliking life with PSV, however. Malen simply wants to take a step up in his career, leaving the Eredvisie for a bigger league and club.
Malen is having a fine season in the Netherlands. He’s got 18 goals and seven assists over 31 Eredivisie games. The forward performed in the Europa League, too, bagging five in either.
It’s all impressive from a player who only turned 22 in January. Impressive enough that we think Liverpool could give him what he wants.
Donyell Malen on the move?
Voetbal International have linked Liverpool and Malen before. They reported that the Reds were at the front of the queue for a £25m deal this summer.
We’ve talked before about how Malen could benefit Liverpool, too. The Reds will want to boost their attack this summer, with Malen offering something a little different to the other players at the club.
Add his age into that and you’ve got the right kind of long-term investment for Liverpool. £25m could end up being a steal.
And it seems that this is exactly the kind of move that Malen is after. He wants to take a step up and playing for Liverpool would be that. It would be the right kind of step up, too.

The Reds wouldn’t ask him to go from leading the line in the Erdeivisie to leading the line at the top of the Premier League. That’s important – we saw how Memphis Depay, for instance, struggled with that increased expectation at Manchester United.
Instead, Liverpool would want Malen to play in support to the current stars and develop over the next few years. That’s reduced pressure and a lot more forgiving on a young player.
But Malen would still have his own niche in the squad. He wouldn’t have to compete with another out-and-out striker – providing Divock Origi leaves. That allows him the security that if he proves he’s good enough, he’ll constantly be an option.
That’s not necessarily the case at a club where he’d compete against another no.9.
So all together, we think this move makes a lot of sense for all parties. If Malen truly is on the move for £25m, we think Liverpool have to consider it.
