Liverpool have been making some clever moves with academy recruitment in the past few years. The Reds youth ranks have been bolstered with some of the best and brightest youngsters with plenty already impressing. Kaide Gordon could well make his Liverpool first team debut next season after he made his first U23s appearance this week.

Youth recruitment

We really began to take notice of academy recruitment when the Reds followed up winning the Champions League with the signing of two youth stars and no senior outfield players.

Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott were brought in with the Reds having fought off intense interest in both players.

The Dutchman has been on loan at Preston North End for the second half of this season, a successful stint.

Meanwhile Harvey Elliott has been one of Blackburn Rovers’ best players of the 2020/21 season.

Since the duo signed in 2019 we’ve also seen the arrivals of Melkamu Frauendorf, Mateusz Musiałowski and Stefan Bajcetic to name a few.

Kaide Gordon Liverpool debut

16-year-old Kaide Gordon joined Liverpool from Derby County in January.

The teenager was lauded by Wayne Rooney as the best of his age in the country having already made his senior debut for the Rams.

Since his switch he’s been impressing for the U18s, starring week in, week out.

This week Gordon made his first appearance for the U23s, playing the last 20 minutes against Leicester City and scoring on his debut at that level.

The teenager showing up for the U23s could be an indicator that he’ll be shifted up a level next term.

If he is then we could well see Kaide Gordon make his senior Liverpool debut in the League Cup next season.

He’s already tasted senior football with Derby, maybe his shot with the Reds isn’t as far away as first thought.
