Liverpool 2-0 Southampton

The Reds went into the game with Southampton knowing that a victory was an absolute necessity.

In recent months the Reds have slid down the table due to a succession of missed chances and sloppy defensive work.

Jürgen Klopp saw his side squander four points in their two games leading up to this weekend.

The Reds let in late equalisers against both Leeds United and Newcastle United, giving themselves an uphill battle to finish in the Champions League spots.

The match went as expected with the Reds dominating possession and the visitors occasionally threatening on the break.

The breakthrough came in the 31st minute when Sadio Mane nodded home Mo Salah’s inch perfect cross clipped towards the back post.

Thereafter it was a nervy affair with Alisson Becker making more saves on Saturday than he ever has in a Premier League game before.

The Brazilian was frequently quick off his line, putting in strong tackles on both Obafemi and Che Adams either side of halftime.

With fans worrying about a repeat of our past couple of games, Thiago stepped up and netted his first Liverpool goal.

Roberto Firmino found the midfielder just outside the box with the playmaker curling one past the keeper into the bottom corner in the 90th minute.

First Thiago goal for Liverpool

Since arriving on Merseyside over the summer we’ve not yet seen the best from Thiago.

The midfielder has had the worst of luck since his £20m summer switch.

He missed a few months due to a knee injury sustained in the Merseyside Derby.

Since returning he hasn’t had the right players around him; the Derby was arguably his best game for the Reds with the reason being that he played alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in the middle.

Despite not showing us his best he has been consistently impressive and seeing Thiago score his first Liverpool goal this weekend will surely have warmed the hearts of Kopites everywhere.
