Here are our player ratings as Liverpool beat Southampton 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday. The Reds picked up a huge win in the race for a top four Premier League finish.
Liverpool player ratings vs Southampton
Alisson – 9
A poor pass stops him from getting a 10 but Liverpool needed Alisson today. Without him, the Reds lose. It’s as simple as that.
Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7
Great first half, quiet second. Alexander-Arnold got Liverpool into some very dangerous positions and was unfortunate not to get an assist or two.
Nat Phillips – 8
Not perfect and he was caught out a couple of times for pace. But there’s still a big difference in Liverpool having Phillips there. A smart display.
Rhys Williams – 6
Not comfortable in a high line and his youth shows itself sometimes. Still, a decent enough game from a wildly inexperienced player stepping in like that.
Andy Robertson – 7
A pretty quiet one from Robertson. Nothing to complain about but not a lot to shout about.
Fabinho – 8
Much like Phillips, Liverpool are just better and more solid with Fabinho in position. Again, the Brazilian kept things solid in midfield.
Gini Wijnaldum – 6
Another very quiet game from Wijnaldum. He wasn’t exactly poor – just quiet.
Thiago – 9
Thiago had a great first half but things got quiet in the second – until the goal. A fantastic finish from an elite player.
Diogo Jota – 6
Probably should have had at least one goal. A decent enough display but he was the weakest of the forwards, certainly.
Sadio Mane – 9
Much more like it. Mane was a constant threat and did wonderfully for his goal. Liverpool need more of this over the next four games.
Mohamed Salah – 7
This would have been a five if not his his fantastic assist for Mane’s goal. Salah threw away chance after chance and while he was getting in good positions, it became frustrating. Still, because he’s brilliant, Salah still provided magic to win the game.
Liverpool 2-0 Southampton final thoughts
This was a really good performance and exactly what Liverpool need to do if they want to finish top four. Solid – not spectacular.
A few more like this and we think they can overhaul Leicester City over the next four games. Very little to complain about here and Liverpool have a lot to shout about.
Thiago gets his first goal – a great finish – and Mane was exceptional. Not to mention Alisson, who put in a world-class effort to keep Southampton out.
Roll on Manchester United.
