‘Please’: Bizarre comments suggest Gini Wijnaldum isn’t close to a contract

It sounds as though Gini Wijnaldum isn’t close to a new contract for next season. That’s judging by some bizarre comments from his agent.

Gini Wijnaldum is out of contract this summer. We all know this much. Figuring out where he’s going is proving a tough task, however.

Liverpool don’t appear to want to lose him but, per the Athletic, they also don’t want to sign Wijnaldum to a lucrative, long-term deal. They’re reluctant to hand those out to players over 30, it seems.

Thus the Dutchman can look elsewhere and has been able to since January. Surprisingly, though, there still hasn’t been any announcement.

Now, there’s no doubt that he has an offer from Liverpool – just not the one he wants. The Mirror says such a deal has long been on the table.

Wijnaldum, though, appears to want more money and a longer deal. We hardly blame him for that, either. He’s been an integral part of a highly-successful team and is an elite midfielder.

Someone, surely, will give him what he wants.

Only, it increasingly looks as though that’s not the case. Especially after bizarre comments from his agent, Humphry Nijman, this week.

“Wijnaldum is a free transfer and keeps all options open,” Nijman told Sport1 in Germany.

“FC Bayern is a great club. If you are interested in him, please feel free to speak to us.”

That’s a very strange, desperate thing to do. Because it sounds as though Bayern very much haven’t approached him for Wijnaldum.

They’ve had months to do that, however, and if they haven’t, then they clearly don’t want him. But Nijman doesn’t seem to actually have anything lined up for Wijnaldum.

So here we are, with under two months to go on his contract, and the agent is pleading for a club to contact him. It’s not usually done that way.

And if it’s reached this point, we’re willing to say that Wijnaldum isn’t particularly close to getting the deal he wants this summer. In fact, it sounds as though he’s quite far from it.

That, of course, only helps Liverpool. That contract remains on the table, after all.

The longer Wijnaldum goes without an agreement, the better than offer looks. Liverpool may just fancy playing a waiting game here and seeing if he relents.

Because make no mistake – after a season without fans, keeping Wijnaldum makes more sense than buying an expensive replacement.
