Calum Scanlon made his debut for Liverpool Under 18s this week. The youngster received praise from his manager.

What a week for Liverpool’s Under 18 side. First, they qualified for the FA Youth Cup semi-finals by beating Arsenal.

Then an entirely different XI smashed Derby County 3-0 to end the season. The strength in depth at Liverpool right now is extraordinary. They even added a player to that depth, in fact, as Calum Scanlon made his debut for the U18s.

Scanlon arrived in December from Birmingham for around £500k. It’s a sizeable chunk of cash for a 15-year-old, suggesting Liverpool have very high hopes for the left-back.

And Tuesday was the beginning in that sense. Scanlon played as Liverpool won 3-0 – despite having had school earlier in the day.

Manager Marc Bridge-Wilkinson was certainly impressed.

“[Calum] was at school,” he said, per the Liverpool Echo. “He looked comfortable on his debut.

“He didn’t look out of place at this level and that’s all you can ask for.”

Liverpool’s depth

It can’t be overstated just how impressive it is that Liverpool can put out two different XIs like this and win twice. There are just so many talented youngsters at the club right now.

Scanlon is just getting started and Liverpool valued him at at least £500k back in December. This win over Derby featured a goal from Kaide Gordon, too – a player signed from the Rams in January and again has a very bright future.

And the, of course, there’s Mateusz Musialowski. He grabbed a wonderful goal in the cup against Arsenal and we think it’s time to get very excited about his talents.

That’s just three players from the Under 18s, all signed within the last 10 months. Liverpool are building something special there.

In the Under 23s, too, there are talents. Billy Koumetio could become something great, as could Layton Stewart and Paul Glatzel up top. Then there’s Leighton Clarkson and Jake Cain in midfield. And many more, of course.

Honestly, there must be a dozen young players at Liverpool – at least – with a first-team future. The Reds just have to make sure they get the players there.

And we haven’t even mentioned the crown jewel – Harvey Elliott. He’s already eyeing up a first-team spot and we’ll back him to get it.

Liverpool have such a bright future in their ranks already. If they get it right, they could end up with several academy products in their squad.

And that would be truly magical.
