Liverpool ranks among the clubs with the most Champions League and European Cup wins ever. Here’s exactly where they rank.
1. Real Madrid – 13
Real Madrid have the most Champions League and European Cup wins of any club. That sentence works either way, in fact.
Combined, Real have more than anyone with 13. But they also had/have the most of either name for competition.
They won six when it was the European Cup and have seven since the 1992 rebranding. That tops either variant.
They first set the standard by winning the first five European Cups, adding a sixth in 1966. Then came a 30-year gap before another period of dominance starting in 1998.
2. AC Milan – 7
Milan won a couple in the 1960s but they really took off in the 1980s under Silvio Berlusconi. The media mogul bankrolled a historically successful side that delivered European success in ’89, ’90 and ’94.
Berlusconi then oversaw a second period of success with wins in 2003 and 2007. The club have fallen away over the last decade but they remain one of European football’s crown jewels.
=3. Liverpool – 6
Liverpool didn’t win their first until 1977 but had four by 1984. They were led by Bob Paisley for three of those – a record that still stands.
In fact, no other manager matched Paisley’s three until Carlo Ancelotti in 2014, with Zinedine Zidane doing the same in 2018.
Joe Fagan delivered one of his own in 1984 before Rafa Benitez did the same 21 years later in Istanbul. Jurgen Klopp, of course, added a sixth to help Liverpool creep up on Milan’s total.
=3. Bayern Munich – 6
The three years before Liverpool’s first all belonged to Bayern. They won in each of ’74, ’75 and ’76 but then had to wait some time before another.
That came in 2001, with another following 12 years later. They’re also the reining European champions, of course, having beaten Paris Saint-Germain in last year’s final.
The win pulled them level with Liverpool once again.
5. Barcelona – 5
Barcelona stand out in all of this as they didn’t win their first until 1992 – the final year before the competition became the Champions League.
In fact, the Catalonians didn’t deliver a second until 2006 but have been fairly dominant ever since. Barcelona won the title in 2009, 2011 and 2015 to bring them to five.
6. Ajax – 4
Ajax have an incredible history, even if their current-day club can’t quite afford to match the elite anymore.
A hattrick of titles from 1971-73 on the back of Johann Cruyff brought them to the pinnacle. At the time, only Real Madrid had more than two.
Their wonderful young side then upset everyone to win a fourth in 1995. They’ve never won it since but Ajax remain a legendary club and one of Europe’s most successful.
=7. Manchester United – 3
United were the first English side to win the European Cup back in 1968 but didn’t repeat the feat for another 31 years.
Another in 2008 took them to three and past Nottingham Forest as the second-most successful English club in Europe.
=7. Internazionale – 3
Inter won back-to-back titles in 1964 and 1965 but like most sides on this list, they underwent a very long period without the trophy.
For the Nerazzurri, they’d have to wait until 2010 and Jose Mourinho before winning again.
Juventus, Benfica, Nottingham Forest and FC Porto each have two wins. The most recent of which was Porto in 2004.
10 clubs have won the European Cup or Champions League once:
Celtic, Feyenoord, Aston Villa, Hamburg, Steaua Bucharest, PSV Eindhoven, Crvena Zvezda, Marseille, Borussia Dortmund, and Chelsea.
