Liverpool have had a torrid season. Injuries have been at the crux of the matter but we can’t ignore other problems with the squad, namely the lack of goals up top. A forward signing over the summer seems inevitable. Long term Liverpool target Kylian Mbappe could be further convinced now is the time to move after PSG were dumped out of the Champions League by Man City.

New forward expected

Jürgen Klopp’s front three have terrorised defences since they came together in 2017.

The past four years have seen goal after goal from the deadly strike force.

However, recent months have seen the trio go off the boil in a major way.

There is an element of fatigue due to the lack of quality backup around to give them a rest.

There is also the consideration that injuries throughout the side has caused an adjustment in how many chances they are getting and the quality of these chances.

Despite these considerations we can’t ignore the golden chances going begging every week.

Four years is quite a long time for an attacking trio to be together without being challenged or rotated.

Jamie Carragher recently said this summer is the time for the front three to be broken up.

Simon Hughes told the Red Agenda podcast that a forward coming in is highly likely:

“From what I’ve been told, that’s something that Liverpool are looking at in the summer [signing an attacker], the one area they do want to improve on.”

Liverpool linked with Kylian Mbappe

It isn’t easy to force your way into this Liverpool attack, just ask Takumi Minamino.

As a result there is a narrow pool of players capable for disrupting the natural order up top.

ESPN are one of a number of outlets reporting that Liverpool want to sign Kylian Mbappe.

Duncan Castles has recently claimed that should the Frenchman move to England then Liverpool would be his first choice.

Whilst Guillem Balague has reported that PSG want around £155m for their star forward.

Edging closer to exit?

Kylian Mbappe is an ambitious young man, who wouldn’t be in his position?

He is the crown prince of European football, destined for a Ballon d’Or or two in his career.

He’s already won the league and the World Cup, now he’s just missing the one in between: the Champions League.

This week his PSG side were dumped out of the competition by Manchester City.

The heartbreak could well push Kylian Mbappe closer to the exit door as he strives to win club football’s premier competition.

If he’s going to go then this summer is the time for it; he will be entering the final year of his deal which will make him more affordable to buyers.

Liverpool just need to convince Kylian Mbappe that he can win the Champions League with the Reds; it shouldn’t be a tough sell.
