Liverpool can line up impressive deal for Sander Berge if reports are true

Sander Berge will be available on a cut-price deal this summer, according to reports. Liverpool have an opportunity here.

The Athletic claims clubs can easily strike a deal for Sander Berge this summer as the player has a release clause. That’ll tempt a few.

The clause comes into effect after the season as Sheffield United are already relegated. That allows Berge to leave for a pre-arranged price.

Now, we’re not sure what that price is – the report doesn’t say. We can’t imagine it’s much more than the £22m he initially arrived for, however.

We also know two other things. Liverpool like him, as the Athletic’s report states, and the Reds need a midfielder this summer.

Sander Berge available

Gini Wijnaldum will almost certainly leave Liverpool at the end of the campaign. His contract is up and as he hasn’t signed a new one, we feel it’s likely he’ll move on.

After all, English clubs will be able to offer him pre-contracts soon and that competition will drive his price up. Liverpool seemingly won’t meet his current demands but someone will.

Someone needs to fill that void, then. Berge may be an ideal fit.

The Reds were linked with the player some time ago, certainly, back when he was at Genk. Goal claimed that at the time, for one.

Sheffield United surprised everyone by snapping up the highly-rated prospect and Berge has looked very good at Premier League level. We don’t believe he quite saw the Blades’ decline coming, though.

But come it has and now Berge is available for other teams. And Liverpool should take note.

We wrote three months ago how Berge would be a good signing ahead of next season. He’d capable both defensively and going forward, as well as an ability to play any style.

Jurgen Klopp could use him in Wijnaldum’s role, covering full-backs and offering a versatile skillset. He could also play Berge in a midfield two, should he want to use the 4-2-4 more often.

In fact, we think a Berge/Fabinho duo could be very effective, if Liverpool were to try it.

But we said all of this before we knew about the release clause. Now Berge is a versatile, experienced midfielder who only turned 23 back in February and is available at a discount.

That, surely, puts him near the top of the list as Liverpool hunt for a Wijnaldum replacement this summer.
