Lionel Messi is on the verge of a new contract with Barcelona, according to reports. It’s a deal that could finally provide closure for Liverpool.
This comes from Eurosport. They say that Lionel Messi will sign a new contract with Barcelona that will see him take a pay cut.
The Argentine is willing to do so as long as Barcelona show ambition going forward. In other words, he’s willing to sacrifice some cash to help his club build a more competitive team.
And they already have their eye on two players. First is Memphis Depay – and it’s easy to see why.
The Dutchman has a connection with Ronald Koeman but more than that, he’s leaving for nothing at the end of his contract with Lyon. Barcelona could quite easily take the money they save from Messi’s contract and put it towards Depay.

Though the Catalonians aim even higher, it seems – they want Erling Haaland. And that’s all well and good but what about Gini Wijnaldum?
We’ve been hearing/reading reports that Wijnaldum was close to joining Barcelona for some time now. There were always problems in the way, however.
They had too much debt, they had elections coming up, they weren’t sure if they wanted Wijnaldum or to hand a bigger role to youth talent.
Really, though, we imagine the real factor is money and whether they could afford his wages. Messi’s new contract would surely fix that, however.
Now, maybe Barcelona do head in a different direction. Maybe they just don’t want Wijnaldum in the end, even with a looser purse-string.
But that still benefits Liverpool – at least it would be an answer. The infuriating thing about all of this has been the uncertainty.
Barcelona have been able to sign Wijnaldum to a contract since January 1st. It’s been four months of nothing, though, and that make life tough for Liverpool.
They still have an offer on the table for Wijnaldum, after all. There’s still a chance he stays and until there isn’t, Liverpool don’t even know if they need a replacement signing.
Hopefully, then, this is the end game. Barcelona can free up some cash and make a firm decision on Wijnaldum, giving Liverpool some closure.
Then the Reds can start moving forward. Perhaps that’s with Wijnaldum, perhaps it’s by sounding out new players for next season.
Either way, it would be nice to just have an answer.
