FSG will sanction a £42m spend on centre-backs this summer, according to reports. It’s a move that will increase pressure on them.
The Sunday World claims Liverpool will sign both Ibrahima Konate and Ozan Kabak this summer. On the face of it, it’s a good move.
Konate is a hugely promising young defender who could go on to become an absolute star. You rarely find players with his potential available for £34m.
As long as he can get over his injury problems, this feels like a steal.
And we’ve seen what Kabak can do. He looks comfortable in big games despite just turning 21 and only being at the club for a few months. There’s great potential there, too.

Together, Liverpool are securing their future at the back for a long, long time. But some questions come with it.
Firstly, this doesn’t sound good for the current centre-backs. The first ‘casualty’ feels like Nat Phillips – how can there possibly be room for him?
But the bigger question is what this means for the trio of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip. Are Liverpool worried about any of them?
Perhaps they should be, given the long-term injuries but it looks as though Liverpool will have five senior centre-backs next season. That’s a lot if you expect them all to be playing.
But the questions go beyond that. In particular, we think this will increase pressure on FSG to spend more.
Are FSG willing to spend?
There’s no doubt that Liverpool need to fix their defence. So on that basis, a £42m double-deal makes sense. But it’s not the only are the Reds need investment.
Gini Wijnaldum will likely leave at the end of the contract, for instance. Liverpool will surely spend to replace the first-team star.
The Athletic claims they like £40m Yves Bissouma. Is FSG going to spend another £40m here? Because there will be calls to.
And that’s before we get to the strikers. There’s a huge reliance on Mohamed Salah right now as he’s the only one scoring goals consistently this season.
There surely must be a striker coming in, then. Again, the Athletic reports Jurgen Klopp wants one.
This is turning out to be a lot of money and suddenly, spending a chunk of cash on an extra centre-back looks like quite a risk. There are at least two more first-team calibre players needed at the club.
Having luxury options at the back are wonderful, undoubtedly. But it’s the necessities in other areas that truly require spending.
And by using up cash before sorting them, the pressure to make this a big summer will increase. We’ll see if FSG are willing to fund it.
