Wijnaldum exit

This summer sees the expiration of Gini Wijnaldum’s contract with Liverpool.

The Dutchman has been with the club since 2016, joining from a relegated Newcastle United.

Since then he’s become an integral part of the midfield, playing more than any other Liverpool midfielder during his five year stint.

The Dutchman has asked for improved terms in order to extend his contract.

However, with the player entering his 30s, the Reds are unwilling to give him a pay hike.

At the moment his most likely destination appears to be Barcelona.

Graeme Souness on Gini Wijnaldum

This season has seen a massive drop off in performance from the Reds.

Graeme Souness has singled out Gini Wijnaldum for his lack of intensity during this difficult period, implying he’s somewhat switched off ahead of his impending exit.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder wrote in his column for the Sunday Times:

“Wijnaldum is leaving for Barcelona and I’m not sure how I’d have reacted to a player who made it clear he was off, how that goes down in a dressing-room.

“The players may make a joke of it, but it also may not sit well with all of them. He’s not played with the same intensity this season.”

What RTK has to say

Gini isn’t the only one who has lacked intensity this season.

The Dutchman has been surrounded by footballers off the pace.

Losing key figures in the side appears to have led to a massive drop off in performance throughout the side.

Unfortunately this has just coincided with the midfielder’s forthcoming departure.
