Liverpool are going to have to address the back line in the summer. The Reds have lost a number of players to injury this term and Jürgen Klopp will be keen to avoid a repeat. Liverpool have been linked with a move for Ibrahima Konate, the Frenchman has spoken about the speculation.
Centre back situation
The Reds have lost every senior centre back to injury this season.
Liverpool saw Virgil van Dijk sidelined as early as October when the Dutchman ruptured his ACL.
Joe Gomez was ruled out soon afterwards, Joel Matip lasted until January.
Although Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies were brought in on transfer deadline day in February, it is still unclear whether the Reds are settled on their centre back roster.
Liverpool and Ibrahima Konate latest
A couple of weeks ago The Athletic reported that Liverpool are finalising a deal for Ibrahima Konate.
The outlet claimed that the Reds were set to activate the centre back’s £34m release clause.
Since then we’ve not had any further concrete updates on the situation.
However, Ibrahima Konate has refuted claims he’s set for Liverpool, telling Bild:
“There are often rumours in football and many believe them immediately.
“I or my agents didn’t get a call from Liverpool. I also have big goals with RB Leipzig: These are currently the best possible results in the Bundesliga, reaching the cup final and the U21 European Championship with France.”
What RTK has to say
Liverpool signing Ibrahima Konate appeared inevitable when The Athletic reported the news.
Now there’s elements of doubt creeping in.
Hopefully the defender is simply remaining professional, refusing to feed the rumours.
Fingers crossed Liverpool to pull this one off, he is an exciting talent.
