Weston McKennie is up for sale, according to reports. He’s someone who could answer a difficult Liverpool problem this summer.
Football Italia claims that Juventus will effectively hold a fire sale this summer. They need to raise around £87m and that puts several players on the market.
One of those is Weston McKennie. They only actually signed him permanently left month, paying £16m as part of a loan deal struck with Schalke 04 at the start of the season.
And all things considered, we think Liverpool should reignite their interest in the American.
We say ‘reignite’ because Liverpool supposedly looked at him last summer. That’s according to Kicker, who are reasonably reliable with transfer news.

As for why Liverpool were interested, it’s very obvious. McKennie was a 21-year-old with years and years of Bundesliga experience.
He’s a competent passer and a very hard-working midfielder who can win tackles and press well. Add to that his versatility – McKennie has experience both in defence and midfield – and you’ve got an awful lot to work with.
Most clubs would love to add that to their squad. Juventus certainly did. But honestly, Liverpool’s need for such a player has increased since then.
It’s now very clear that Gini Wijnaldum will leave at the end of the season when his contract expires. He will leave a big hole in the squad and one that’s difficult to fill.
Bringing in a player with his skillset is very difficult. It’s especially difficult to find one with the same skillset and experience.
McKennie, though, is someone who can get to that level. We’re talking about a 22-year-old with six goals from midfield despite a reputation as a defence-minded player.
Liverpool could, quite comfortably, develop McKennie into Wijnaldum’s successor. Give it a few years and we think Jurgen Klopp would work wonders with him.
And if Juventus sell at a discount, there’s a potential bargain here. Replacing Wijnaldum will be tough but McKennie might be one of the best ways to do so.
