15 goals, 2.8 tackles: Teun Koopmeiners would be perfect for Liverpool

Teun Koopmeiners looks like the ideal Liverpool target. The Reds reportedly want the player.

CalcioMercato claims that Liverpool want Teun Koopmeiners. No, it’s not the strongest link in the world – the ‘report’ is just a couple of sentences from a source that has no obvious connections to either party.

But that doesn’t stop us from believing Koopmeiners is just about perfect for Liverpool right now.

It’s obvious what the Reds need – a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutchman is out of contract this summer and looks unlikely to renew.

That’s a key player leaving, then, creating a gap in Liverpool’s squad that they have to fill. Although, how they fill it is up for debate.

They’ll surely want a similar player. That is, someone who is confident in both attack and defence. Liverpool thrive on midfielders who can play every style and offer a bit of everything – an ability to adjust in-game to whatever the team needs.

But that player doesn’t need to be perfect from the get-go.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

Thiago’s arrival lightened the need for Wijnaldum, after all. Liverpool can go into next season with Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson as their first-choice midfield.

Thus any Wijnaldum replacement doesn’t necessarily have to be a ready-made star. It can instead be a squad player with room to grow.

And Koopmeiners has plenty of room to grow. In fact, signing a player young enough to develop into a star makes sense.

Liverpool have an ageing squad and need an injection of youth. They will want players who can push into their prime as the current stars fade.

Koopmeiners, at 23, fits that bill. But he also fits the bill as an all-around midfielder.

His stats this season are quite remarkable, in fact. Koopmeiners has 15 goals this season, with around half coming as penalties.

But he’s also got five assists. It gives the impression that he’s an all-out attacking midfielder but the Dutchman really isn’t.

He plays most of his games in midfield but can also play as a defensive midfielder or centre-back. He’s a player who, on top of his attacking output, averages 2.8 tackles per game and 1.3 interceptions.

It’s all quite remarkable. Koopmeiners has ability in every area of midfield, is just 23 and seems perfect for what Liverpool need.

If they can get a reasonable price on the player, Koopmeiners is a dream come true.
