Mikel Arteta explains why Arsenal didn't stand a chance against Liverpool

Liverpool are back! The Reds have showed us that they are set to fight to the death for a top four spot, thrashing Arsenal in their own backyard. It was a thoroughly impressive display. Mikel Arteta has explained why Arsenal didn’t stand a chance against Liverpool.

Liverpool batter Arsenal

We really needed this one.

The Reds went to North London having won their last Premier League game but by no means in convincing fashion.

This was a markedly different affair with the Reds looking confident and creating chances.

Despite the visitors’ dominance the game didn’t really liven up until the introduction of Diogo Jota.

The Portugal star nodded home an exceptional cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold to open the scoring.

It was Mo Salah who doubled the lead with a clever finish through Bernd Leno’s legs.

Then it was time for Diogo Jota to grab his second, lashing one past the keeper after an error from Gabriel.

Mikel Arteta on Liverpool

The hosts never looked like winning the game.

They didn’t threaten and were poor at the back.

Speaking after the game, Mikel Arteta explained why Arsenal didn’t stand a chance against Liverpool (via Liverpool ECHO):

“Liverpool completely deserved to win the game, probably with a bigger margin.

“They were much better than us in every single department. We were extremely poor.

“When you don’t do any of the basics right against this level of opponent, you don’t have a chance to compete. And that’s exactly what happened.

“Credit to Liverpool today, they were really good today. This was probably one of the worst defeats we have had and one that really shocked me.”

What RTK has to say

Mikel Arteta is gracious in defeat we’ll give him that.

Kopites really needed this performance, even if the win was somewhat handed to us by how poor Arsenal were.

We needed to capitalise on Chelsea’s defeat in the afternoon and we did so in style.
