Liverpool reportedly get another one right as Jonathan David sinks PSG

Jonathan David grabbed the goal that beat PSG on Saturday. It appears Liverpool were right about his potential.

Lille now have a three-point lead over Paris Saint-Germain at the top of Ligue 1. They’re having a wonderful season, beyond all expectations.

So why the link to Liverpool, here? Well, it was Jonathan David who sunk PSG. The Reds were supposedly eyeing him up this summer.

And it appears they got that one right – he’s a player with huge potential.

Development

The Liverpool Echo claimed in October that the Reds had three forward targets last summer. Diogo Jota, Ismaila Sarr and David were on the shortlist, with Liverpool opting for Jota.

David instead signed for Lille, costing the French side around £27m. Things started very slowly, though.

But things have picked up. As we recently wrote, David is performing at elite levels in certain areas – areas Liverpool will like.

His pressing is outstanding, as is his movement. Now he’s adding goals, too. His striker in the 1-0 win over PSG was David’s 10th of the campaign.

But it was more than that. David showed an ability to impact a massive game against a top team – something he hadn’t quite done yet.

David’s goal saw him drift towards the penalty spot for a cutback, compose himself with his first touch and fire home. It was a goal that oozed confidence – a great look for a 21-year-old.

The Athletic’s James Pearce hinted that Liverpool could still be in the market for David. He brought the striker up when talking about targets on the Ask Ornstein podcast.

And it wouldn’t shock us. Liverpool appear to have gotten this one completely right and David is a player with top potential.

He’d likely cost a fair bit if they went back in but his form this season will surely tempt them.
