News of Liverpool’s transfer plans doesn’t bode well for Ozan Kabak. The Turkish defender is on loan with the Reds.
This comes from the Athletic. They claim Liverpool only plan to sign one centre-back this summer – and that’s not good news for Ozan Kabak.
That’s because Kabak is only actually on loan with Liverpool. The Reds can sign him permanently for £18m but there’s no obligation there.
The 21-year-old is competing against possible signings, then, as he attempts to earn himself that transfer. But he may have lost that battle already.
The Athletic reported yesterday that Liverpool are close to signing Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig. They’d pay £35m for the privilege and in return, they get a different 21-year-old centre-back.

But Konate has experience at a higher level than Kabak, having played Champions League football with Leipzig. He’s also battled at the top of the Bundesliga, rather than at the bottom like Kabak.
What RTK has to say
We find it very unlikely that Liverpool would sign two centre-backs. They’d surely have to sell someone to justify that but it’s difficult to see who.
Joel Matip is the obvious choice but is the market there? He’s 30 later this year and has really struggled with injuries in recent seasons.
The good news for Kabak is that no deal with Konate is done. He still seems to have time to convince Liverpool and his position isn’t an impossible one.
After all, his fee is half of Konate’s. He really just needs to prove he has similar potential and Liverpool would certainly choose him.
But reports that they’re already moving ahead with Konate does suggest they don’t see that same potential. As things stand, it’s difficult to see how Kabak remains at Anfield beyond this season.
