Liverpool have had some legendary players at the club over the years but perhaps none greater than Captain Fantastic. Now managing Rangers, the midfielder left an indelible mark on his boyhood club. Whilst naming his all time XI of teammates, Charlie Adam has heaped praise on Steven Gerrard.
Charlie Adam at Liverpool
The early 2010s were heady days for Blackpool.
The Tangerine Army were in the Premier League under Ian Holloway and they had a Scottish midfielder terrifying defences with his corners.
Liverpool decided to snap up Charlie Adam for the 2011/12 season.
The set piece specialist spent just the one season at the Reds, making 37 appearances in all competitions before being sold to Stoke City.
Charlie Adam on Steven Gerrard
Despite only being at Anfield for the year, the Scotsman has named a number of Reds in his all time XI of teammates, an understandable decision given the quality of player he was around for that season.
Charlie Adam reserved special praise for Steven Gerrard, telling the BBC:
“A great, genuine, top guy – everyone looks at him on this pedestal and I still look up to him now. Until you get into that dressing room with him, I was overawed by him. When you get down to it he was just a great guy that wanted to win.
“He won trophies on his own, like in that FA Cup final against West Ham. When I was at the club I remember him coming back from injury and he scored a hat-trick against Everton in the derby and he just walked off the pitch like it was nothing. He’s my captain, he’s my best player.”
What RTK has to say
Charlie Adam must feel honoured to have played with Steven Gerrard.
The Scouser is arguably the finest midfielder that England has ever seen.
As the ex-Blackpool man says, Stevie won trophies on his own. How did he ever win the European Cup with that team?
We miss him dearly, hopefully he’ll be back in the future.
