Diogo Jota grabbed a brace for Portugal on Saturday in a 2-2 draw with Serbia. The Liverpool star lets everyone at Liverpool relax.
Liverpool have struggled badly for goals in 2021. Particularly at Anfield, where their only goal was a penalty in a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.
It’s been a shocking run of form that no one really thought was possible a few months ago. But Liverpool just can’t finish with any consistency.
You can see the problem, too. Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have managed one Premier League goal each in 2021 and they came in the same game.
Liverpool have just not had reliable goalscorers since the turn of the year. It’s a particularly bad problem, given their well-documented issues in defence.

Not scoring goals heaps even more pressure on a make-shift backline that’s full of inexperienced defenders. The only way to fix that is to start putting the ball in the net.
The hope is that Diogo Jota really has hit the ground running on his return from injury. He suggested that against RB Leipzig, creating Liverpool’s opener.
Then get grabbed the winner away at Wolves while starting as a centre-forward. Liverpool look sharper with Jota up top and he could be a long-term answer there.
But it’s only two games. Liverpool need more evidence that Jota can fix their goalscoring woes.
Fortunately, they found further evidence on Saturday evening. Jota started for Portugal away at Serbia to wonderful success.
Drifting in from the left, Jota scored twice in the first half to put Portugal 2-0 up at half-time. Now, they collapsed to a 2-2 draw but Jota, certainly, made his point.
The goals were both headers, too, as Jota continues to show an ability to find goals no matter what you give him. We didn’t predict he’d be such a natural finisher when he joined for £41m but he’s proving that he is.
And with that, we can all relax a little. Jota is scoring goals for fun and can be the answer to Liverpool’s difficult scoring problem.
