Jason McAteer has urged his former club Liverpool to consider a summer swoop for Borussia Dortmund sensation, Jadon Sancho.
The Reds have been heavily tipped to sign a number of elite-level players this summer, notably Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe. However, McAteer believes that Sancho is the player that Jurgen Klopp needs to look towards.
It wasn’t too long ago, after all, that Liverpool were touted as the favourites to land the 18-time England international.
According to the Independent, the Reds have now leapfrogged Manchester United as the front-runners to land Sancho this summer.
However, Liverpool, too, have been mentioned to withhold an interest in Paris Saint Germain forward Kylian Mbappe, whose contract at the Parc des Princes is due to expire next year.

Duncan Castles of The Times recently reported that Mbappe, 22, would seriously consider the prospect of linking up with the reigning Premier League champions.

And while ex-Anfield starlet Castles has acknowledged Mbappe as one of the best players in world football, he feels that former Manchester City man Sancho would suit Klopp better in terms of the player’s versatility.
Speaking with Goal, he said: “You’ll think I’ll say if I can sign any player, I’d sign Mbappe? But I’d sign Jadon Sancho.
“I’d sign him because he’s got that versatility. I think he can play different positions: he can play left, or right, or down the centre if you wanted.
“He’s got pace and he’s got creativity. If there’s a low block and you need something a little bit different, he offers that. He’s also young and he fits into the mould of this Liverpool team. That’s the player I’d go out and buy.”
What RTK has to say
Let’s be honest, the chances that Liverpool pursue Sancho this summer are precarious, to say the least.
The 21-year-old is worth an eye-watering £87 million, after all, per reports from BBC Sports.
This is quite the outlay of money for a player, whose only club honour to date is a German Super Cup.
Still, Sancho can showcase his credentials on the biggest stage in just a matter of days. He’s scheduled to face his former club, City, on April 6.
This will determine whether or not Sancho is ready to deliver the big trophies.
City are the favourites to win the competition, after all. It’s fair to assume, then, that this represents Sancho’s biggest test to date.
Dortmund haven’t made the semi-finals of the competition since Jurgen Klopp was at the helm, too. To get one over his former employer would send a statement to the rest of Europe.
It’s the kind of game that decides whether you can cut it at the top or not. Mbappe had a similar kind of test recently against Barcelona – and we all know how that played out.
Should Sancho be the difference maker against City, then there is no question his stock will rise significantly this summer.
We know he’s a top player, though, now is the time to deliver on the biggest stage.
After all, we’d love nothing more than to see Sancho send Pep Guardiola and his team packing at the quarter-final stage for a third successive season.
