Liverpool have had some controversial footballers at the club down the years. Some have been troubled geniuses some have just been trouble. One of our most controversial former stars is idolised in his home country. Some Liverpool fans aren’t too happy about Sadio Mane posing for a picture with El Hadji Diouf.

Few Liverpool players live in greater infamy than El Hadji Diouf.
The Senegal striker was signed from Lens in 2002 after impressing at the World Cup, the Reds had recently signed his compatriot Salif Diao.
Although he had some promising early appearances the striker failed to live up to the hype.
He instead caused plenty of trouble. The forward’s defining moment came when he spat on a Celtic fan in 2003.
Diouf was banned for a fortnight and the Reds made a £60,000 donation to Celtic’s charity of choice.
The forward eventually left for Bolton having scored just six goals in 80 appearances for Liverpool
Jamie Carragher later slammed him for having, ‘one of the worst strike rates of any forward in Liverpool history.’

Despite his controversies at Anfield the forward is much admired in his home country.
The forward is an idol in his native Senegal, footballer like Sadio Mane grew up wanting to be El Hadji Diouf.
The current Reds’ star this week posted a photo of himself with Diouf, with a caption describing Diouf as the best player in Senegal’s history.
Fans not pleased
Given the player’s controversial history at Anfield plenty of Liverpool fans aren’t happy about Sadio Mane posing with El Hadji Diouf.
One fan commented that followers should use him as a ‘dislike button’.

He was also described as a bad egg, with fans saying they wouldn’t be associating with the controversial forward.
