Virgil van Dijk faces a crunch decision over the next few weeks and Wednesday’s result won’t help. It’s a potential disaster for Liverpool.
Will Virgil van Dijk play at the Euros? The possibility is there, according to numerous reports.
The Dutchman hasn’t played since October 17th, of course, and is still rehabilitating a serious knee injury. Yet, the Netherlands play at the Euros this summer.
And they’ll want their captain. He’s the best defender on the planet, after all, and if they think he’s ready, Van Dijk’s country will come calling.
That’s according to De Telegraaf, anyway.

Jurgen Klopp talked about the likelihood openly, though, believing it’s a big ask.
“It is not my decision but to be honest, the information I have at the moment is that it will be unlikely,” said Klopp, per Sky Sports.
Yet, apparently, Van Dijk leans towards playing. The Mirror say Liverpool are ‘horrified’ at the prospect but that’s the situation. They don’t want their star taking such a chance on his knee so soon.
They also can’t stop him.
Liverpool did receive a slight boost this week, though. Manager Frank de Boer admitted he’s not planning to have Van Dijk available.
“Anything he can contribute to Liverpool and possibly us would be a bonus. I’m not counting on it right now,” he said, per the Athletic.
And then Wednesday happened.
The Netherlands lost 4-2 to Turkey, going 3-0 down by half-time. They attempted a comeback, only to concede again with six minutes to go.
A result like this will only increase the calls for Van Dijk. The Netherlands looked weak at the back and against a team that isn’t exactly a favourite for the Euros.
They have a quick-fix, though – taking a chance on Van Dijk’s knee. It’s a potential disaster for Liverpool, who could really use the Netherlands feeling confident without the player.
Instead, as his decision nears, Van Dijk will almost certainly hear pleas for help from his homeland.
