Report: Barcelona begin preparations for Gini Wijnaldum deal

Barcelona are preparing to complete a deal for Gini Wijnaldum, according to reports. They’ve transfer-listed six players.

This comes from Catalonian radio station Sin Concesiones. They claim that Barcelona have six players on their transfer list.

One of these is relevant to Liverpool – Miralem Pjanic. Barcelona want to strike a deal with Gini Wijnaldum to replace the Bosnian.

Finding a buyer for Pjanic appears to be step one for that.

Wijnaldum’s contract expires at the end of the season, of course. He’s already free to agree a deal with a non-English club.

The Times reported last week that he’d done just that, agreeing to move to Barcelona this summer. However, it appears that was premature.

The Liverpool Echo understands that Wijnaldum has made no such commitment – his future remains up in the air. Regardless, it feels very likely that the Dutchman is on his way to Barcelona.

What RTK has to say

Pjanic is a player Barcelona will surely sell anyway, given they’ve barely used him as a starter this season. But the fact they’re reportedly making these decisions now is quite telling.

Talk of Wijnaldum to Catalonia is heating up, after all. That’s no real surprise, really, given Barcelona just elected a new president.

They were always likely to wait for that before committing to anything. Now they’ve got their man, they can start putting plans into place.

Part of that is outgoing, of course – they’re not a club in a simple financial situation. They will want to move players out before bringing stars in.

No one knows exactly what the discussions have been between Barcelona and Wijnaldum. It feels probably that they’ve asked him to hold off on a decision until they were ready, though.

Now they’re apparently ready. We might finally get an answer to this one soon, then. But it likely won’t end with Wijnaldum wearing Red.
