Patson Daka can be the forward Jurgen Klopp reportedly wants. The Liverpool boss if after something specific.
The Athletic recently claimed that Jurgen Klopp has a priority in the transfer window this summer. No, it’s not a defender.
It’s not even a midfielder, despite Gini Wijnaldum likely leaving the club this summer. Instead, the Liverpool boss wants a forward.
But it gets more specific than that. Klopp isn’t after a superstar to replace a current option. He doesn’t want someone to build around.
That rules out someone like Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe. They’d replace a star and immediately become the focal point.

Klopp wants a supplemental forward, someone who can come in and offer something a little different. Someone who works with the options he knows but can improve his overall assets.
And Liverpool may have found that player. Salzburger Nachrichten claims the Reds want Patson Daka and he’s a player that fits the Klopp bill.
Now, they’re not the only ones. Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal all like the look of Daka, too.
But we think he’s exactly what Liverpool and Klopp want.
Liverpool don’t have an out-and-out striker other than Divock Origi. The Belgian doesn’t deliver anything, however, and hasn’t been consistently good for two years.
The Daily Mail believe he’ll be off at the end of the season, which is hardly a surprise. It’s time to try something different.
And we think that’s Daka. There are a few obvious reasons for that.
Daka can lead the line as that out-and-out goalscorer and he can deliver, too. He has a remarkable 20 goals in 18 league games this season, playing for RB Salzburg.
It’s easy to see comparisons to Erling Haaland, there, given Daka was effectively his replacement up top. Somehow, he’s delivering similar quality.
Daka, then, would come in as a goalscoring striker to fill the Origi void. With no one else playing that role, he’d be an obvious supplement as Klopp wants.
But Daka is still only 22 – there’s huge potential here. Liverpool could develop him for a few years and get an even better player at the end of it.
He’s young enough to trial a new position, too. Perhaps Liverpool could improve his versatility by adding wing-play to his game. Suddenly, he’s a magnificent squad option who can play with anyone.
Importantly, he’s young enough to still be around after Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino fade.
And coming from the Austrian Bundesliga, Daka wouldn’t demand a first-XI role. He wouldn’t replace anyone – again, as Klopp wants. Instead, he’d be a very exciting, promising option that fills a place in the squad.
Salzburg reportedly want £17m for that. For us, it would be a bargain. Daka seems to be exactly what Liverpool and Klopp want.
