Liverpool supposedly want Santos talent Angelo Gabriel. A club director confirmed as much.
Sport Witness linked Liverpool with Santos winger Angelo Gabriel a little over a week ago. They claimed the Reds hoped to beat everyone else to the punch and snap up the 16-year-old.
Unfortunately, Real Madrid had exactly the same idea.
Gabriel isn’t a cheap player, either. He’s got a £51m release clause on a two-year contract – Santos have the power here.
And they’re a club well-versed in selling youth products. Rodrygo’s move to Real happened in the last few years but players like Neymar and Robinho moved for big money, too.
Liverpool, though, appear to believe they can snap up the next great Santos talent in Gabriel. And the Brazilian club support Sport Witness’s claims.
Jorge Andrade, a Santos director, says Liverpool are very interested in signing the teenager.
Angelo is a boy who has been growing, developing and (the scouts) are certainly watching him,” he said, per Radio Bandeirantes.
“Not only Liverpool but other teams in the European market as well.”
There would very much be a race for him, then. The secret is out and if Gabriel is as good as Liverpool seem to think, you can bet more than just Real will get involved for this one.
What RTK has to say
We can only really repeat what we said last time – take this one with a pinch of salt. Gabriel would be an immensely risky signing and not one Liverpool usually make.
Santos would want a massive fee for a player who is yet to accomplish anything at senior level. But we’ve seen how that can go wrong – from Santos.
Gabriel Barbosa went to Europe with a fantastic reputation but struggled badly with Inter. Now he’s back in Brazil and thriving – he clearly left too young.
So we don’t really expect Liverpool to go big on the next Gabriel. But maybe he’s the next Neymar? That’s the only real situation where this one would make sense.
