Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor believes Ben Davies could play for England. The defender joined the Reds last month.
Ben Davies could go on to play for England. That’s according to ex-Liverpool man Neil Mellor.
Davies joined Liverpool from Preston North End on February 1st, of course. Mellor, who played for both clubs, says he’s seen enough from the defender to tip him as a potential international.
It depends on Davies making it happen, however.
“For me, [Davies] is a player that I have always believed can play in the Premier League and I am absolutely delighted he is going to get that opportunity and now it is up to him to take it,” said Mellor, per the Liverpool Echo.
“This kid can play for England if he really grasps it. He is not someone who was a stop-gap, he could potentially, long-term, be the answer and that is up to him.”
What RTK has to say
Unfortunately, we’ll have to take his word for it. Despite over six weeks with Liverpool, Davies is yet to debut.
In fact, the earliest he can now step on to the pitch would be over two months after his arrival. It makes you wonder if we’ll ever see Davies.
After all, he arrived to help cover the injury crisis this season. Not playing him does ask questions of his suitability – there’s not much left of the season.
And after this campaign, we can’t imagine he’ll stick around. He won’t get chances with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all back. He can’t get them even with the stars missing.
Still, Mellor has seen a lot more of him than we have and if he says there’s England-level potential then we’ll believe him. Liverpool did sign Davies for a reason – he must have considerable talent.
Whether that ability can make him an international, though, we don’t know. Hopefully, we have a better idea before the end of the season.
