Wijnaldum contract expiring

Last summer Gini Wijnaldum entered the final year of his deal at Anfield.

The Dutchman has become an undroppable member of Jürgen Klopp’s midfield in recent years.

He is perpetually available and also in perpetual motion when on the pitch, he can be found constantly hounding opposition when out of possession.

Despite his importance to the side the player and club have been unable to agree on an extension to his Liverpool contract.

Gini Wijnaldum and Barcelona

There have been links between the player and dozens of clubs.

A number of reports throughout the year have claimed he has an agreement with this club and that one.

The Sunday Times last weekend reported that Gini Wijnaldum has agreed to join Barcelona in the summer.

The report stated that he is set to become the first signing of the second Joan Laporta reign with the executive granting Ronald Koeman his wish of having the Dutch midfielder at the Camp Nou.

Liverpool could still keep Gini Wijnaldum

The midfielder has had one foot out of the door all season due to the contract stand off.

Liverpool could well keep Gini Wijnaldum as the report claiming he has agreed a deal with Barcelona may not be accurate.

The Liverpool ECHO has stated that Gini Wijnaldum hasn’t told the Reds of any such deal.

A number of publications, AS in Spain being one, has reported throughout this saga that Wijnaldum has insisted he’d tell the Reds first if he agreed a move away.

If Liverpool haven’t been told then he may not have agreed a move after all, giving the Reds more time to tie him down to a new contract; it would be a tragedy to lose such an important player.

However, it is important to remember that Wijnaldum isn’t obliged to tell the Reds of any future move.
