Virgil van Dijk nears a decision on his comeback, according to reports. It’s one that horrifies Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
This comes from the Mirror. They claim that Virgil van Dijk plans a comeback at the Euros this summer.
The Dutchman has been out since October 17th, of course, when he suffered a serious knee injury. Surgery followed, with an extensive rehabilitation process still ongoing.
The expectation is that he won’t play again for Liverpool this season. Jurgen Klopp thinks it’s unlikely he plays at the Euros, too.
“It is not my decision but to be honest, the information I have at the moment is that it will be unlikely,” said Klopp, per Sky Sports.
“So [it’s] not that I don’t let them go, because I don’t want to have to do that anyway, it is because of the extent of the injuries.”
Well, it appears he’s wrong and that Van Dijk wants to play for the Netherlands. The Mirror’s report claims Klopp and Liverpool are ‘horrified’ at the idea.
What RTK has to say
But there’s a serious risk of long-term damage with this plan. That’s according to a Dutch surgeon, anyway, who spoke to Nos this week.
Still, we’re not sure we can blame Van Dijk. From a bias, Liverpool perspective, we hope he stays at home and ignores the Euros.
The risk is too high for us and the club desperately needs him back next season.
But at the same time, he’s got the chance to captain his country at an international competition. It’s going to be very difficult to pass that up if he even feels 75% sure.
It’s a horrible situation for everyone – someone is losing out. But we do see where everyone is coming from.
But for Liverpool’s sake, we hope Van Dijk waits to make his comeback in Red.
