Matthew Hoppe is the wrong man for Liverpool's reported £17m job

Matthew Hoppe is not the answer Liverpool need for their reported £17m job. The Reds supposedly want the American.

We don’t yet know how good Matthew Hoppe will be. The player has got five goals for Schalke 04 this season, which isn’t too shabby at 20.

Only, they came in a three-game span. Hoppe has featured in 17 games this season and scored in just three of them.

At the same time, Schalke are absolutely awful. They’ve won once all season, sit rock bottom in the Bundesliga and are 11 points from second-last.

Hoppe’s five goals may not be much but they’re more than twice what anyone else has got. Only two other players have reached the heights of two goals.

All things considered, Hoppe appears to be a talent. Enough that Transfermarkt believe Liverpool have genuine interest in him.

But we think he’s the wrong man for right now.

Wrong man for the job

There will be a free spot up top, it seems. The Daily Mail report that Liverpool want to sell Divock Origi.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

They wish to reinvest the funds, with Spanish outlet El Gol claiming those funds could be £17m.

As for how they’d use those funds, the Athletic claims Liverpool want a new forward. Not exactly surprising. Specifically, they want someone to supplement the current stars, rather than replace them.

In other words, they want an upgrade on Origi.

If that’s the plan, Hoppe is not the answer. We don’t see how Liverpool benefit from it.

Hoppe is in a position where he needs first-team football, meaning the Reds surely only sign him to put him in their first-team. There would be games, too, with Origi gone.

But he’s far too much of a gamble at this stage. We really don’t know just how good he is, just that there’s potential there.

There’s a very real chance that Liverpool replace a lack of goals from Origi with a lack of goals from Hoppe. Certainly to begin with.

But Liverpool don’t have much time. They need to get things right next season, while their current stars are still in their prime. The fact many approach 30 means time is a factor.

Get it wrong, and Liverpool hurt their chances of delivering another trophy with this group. And for us, Hoppe is just too much of a risk right now.
