FSG will expect more trophies with reported Liverpool transfer plan

FSG clearly want more trophies in recent years. That’s going by recent reports around their transfer plan.

This summer is a huge one for Liverpool and it won’t be easy. Even deciding what to do isn’t straightforward.

This season has been a disaster, after all. It was supposed to see Liverpool retain the Premier League and instead, they’re fighting for a top four spot.

So what do you do? Do you tear everything up and start again? Or do you back the players to rebound once injuries ease up next season?

You have to consider player ages, too. Most of Liverpool’s stars are pushing 30 and won’t be at the best in a couple of years. Now, then, feels like a natural time to bite the bullet and replace them.

And with that comes expectations. Or at least, the lowering of them. Changing a winning side means a few seasons of misfits and fresh-faces – and a decline in quality.

Liverpool, after all, won’t immediately swap out their stars for players just as good. It doesn’t work that way.

And FSG reportedly see that coming. The Mirror claims they effectively plan a decline while the squad is rebuilt. There will be a couple of years where Liverpool aren’t competing at the very top, just as new players are integrated.

That’s fair enough, then. Only, that doesn’t appear to be the plan this summer.

Expectations

The Athletic claim that Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp have a priority this summer – a new forward. But not a superstar replacement. They want someone who can supplement the current stars.

That tells us several things but it also means Liverpool are not tearing this squad up. They’re keeping it together and hope to sign someone who can support it, much like Diogo Jota last summer.

Thus there is no planned decline next season – the stars will remain and won’t be replaced. And that means FSG, as well as Klopp, believe this squad can still win trophies.

They’re backing the players to go again and win again, rather than bring about the expected decline a revamp would. FSG, then, want this team to win next season.

We’ll see how much that’s worth in transfer funds.
