Liverpool may already have their defender in mind ahead of the transfer window. That’s the suggestion from a reported plan.
The Athletic claims that Jurgen Klopp has a transfer priority this summer – a new attacker. Not a superstar attacker, but someone to supplement his current options.
Think the original plan for Diogo Jota before he exploded into life.
It’s interesting, given that an attacker is arguably priority number 3. That’s not because Liverpool don’t need one – they definitely do – but because there are glaring holes elsewhere.
Take midfield, for instance. Gini Wijnaldum will likely leave at the end of his deal and that necessitates a replacement. Yet, apparently, it’s not the priority.

But there’s an even more obvious hole – defence. Injuries crippled Klopp’s options this season as he went into the campaign with just three senior options.
All three picked up season-ending injuries and the squad didn’t have enough depth to cover it. Surely, then, Liverpool need someone new.
The fact this isn’t a priority tells us something – Liverpool have already found their man. And the most-likely candidate for that is Ozan Kabak.
The 20-year-old joined on loan on February 1st but Liverpool can sign him permanently, if they choose. We think they just might.
He’s starting to look good and at just 20, there’s a lot of room to grow. Liverpool may just think he’s the defender to add to their ranks in the transfer window.
Certainly, as a fourth-choice option, you can’t do much better. Not without dropping £40m, anyway.
But perhaps it’s an increased faith in Nat Phillips. Maybe Liverpool have another target lined up that allows them to focus elsewhere.
No matter what the reason is, it sounds as though Liverpool have something in mind. And that’s certainly good news.
