Liverpool find a dream target in Alessandro Bastoni

Liverpool have looked at Alessandro Bastoni, according to reports. The player would be a dream signing right now.

Liverpool will surely pay for another defender this summer. There’s half a chance they opt for Nat Phillips as a fourth-choice centre-back and don’t sign anyone else, but that feels very unlikely.

And perhaps the ‘new’ player is as simple as signing Ozan Kabak permanently. They have the option to do so, of course.

But regardless of those options, they’re going to look elsewhere. That’s certainly the impression recent reports give.

CalcioMercato claim Liverpool offered to buy Alessandro Bastoni from Internazionale. Gazzetta dello Sport backs up that interest.

This shouldn’t be any surprise. The Italian defender is something of a dream signing right now.

Ideal

Bastoni is a 21-year-old centre-back, playing at the top of Serie A. That’s already impressive but the player is also coming up on three years of top-flight experience.

That’s almost unheard of. Very few defenders have that kind of faith in them, let alone with a team the size of Inter.

It makes Bastoni absolutely ideal for Liverpool. He has enormous room for growth – something the Reds enjoy.

They have built up virtually every player in their squad, signing very few as finished products. Few, though, have come in with both the base to build on, as well as the enormous potential.

It’s a fantastic combination. And really, it’s exactly what Liverpool need right now.

Both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are pushing 30, after all. They need long-term replacements and Liverpool will want those players here right now.

They’ll want to develop the talents themselves, moulding them into exactly what they want for a seamless changing of the guard.

Bastoni offers a perfect opportunity for that. He’s already good enough to play at the highest level and shouldn’t hit his prime for another six years.

It’s a shame, then, that Inter are apparently so reluctant to sell. But that shouldn’t stop Liverpool from asking. Bastoni could be a rare opportunity they can’t afford to miss.
