Reported interest in Divock Origi is a welcome surprise

A few teams hold interest in signing Divock Origi, according to reports. It’s a welcome surprise for Liverpool.

The Daily Mail reported a few days ago that Liverpool hoped to sell Divock Origi. They want money they can reinvest, apparently.

It makes sense. Origi hasn’t actually delivered for the Reds in quite some time, with just one Premier League goal over 2020. His assist against RB Leipzig last week was his first goal or assist in the Premier League or Champions League this season.

In fact, it was his first assist in over a year.

That’s not good enough for someone coming off your bench. Doesn’t matter if you’re challenging for the top trophies or in a relegation scrap – you need to get something.

So we understand Liverpool wanting to sell. The problem, then, is whether anyone wants to buy.

Such a record won’t appeal to many, after all, and at 25, Origi is no longer a young player. Fortunately, there’s reportedly a welcome surprise here.

Welcome surprise

El Gol Digital claim Real Sociedad want Origi to replace Alexander Isak. The young forward is likely leaving the club this summer and there’s a need for someone new.

More than that, they name three Premier League clubs as interested in Origi. That couldn’t be more perfect.

Given the same report claims Liverpool want £17m for Origi, having interest from four different clubs is ideal. The Reds are far more likely to get their full amount with several parties looking at him.

We didn’t expect there to be much interest in Origi this summer. Certainly not from clubs who could pay a substantial fee.

Fortunately, it appears we’re wrong. Clubs want Origi – clubs with, potentially, money to spend.

That bodes very well for Liverpool this summer and is a much welcome surprise.
