Liverpool could repeat the Gini Wijnaldum transfer by signing Sander Berge. Reports claim the Reds want the latter.
Eurosport says Liverpool want Sander Berge. They’d look to take advantage of Sheffield United’s almost-certain relegation and bring him in as a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum.
Wijnaldum, of course, will likely leave Liverpool at the end of the season. His contract is up and he’s yet to agree an extension – it doesn’t look good.
And in Berge, Liverpool find a tempting replacement. In fact, they could try and repeat the magic of the Wijnaldum signing.
Repeat
There’s the obvious parallel – Liverpool signed Wijnaldum from a relegated team and would do the same with Berge. But they’re also fairly similar in other ways.
They’re both all-action midfielders, capable of both shielding a defence and carrying the ball in attacking areas. The two of them were also wonderkids.
Wijnaldum had a fantastic reputation in the Netherlands from a very young age. First with Feyenoord and then as captain of PSV.
Berge had a similar reputation with Genk. In fact, it was a real surprise that he chose to join Sheffield United. He had his pick of nearly anywhere.
So Liverpool would have a similar talent to work with, although at a younger age. Someone who’s always had fantastic ability but just hasn’t quite reached their potential at a top team.

All Wijnaldum needed was a bit of refining and a place in a system. We think Berge could really benefit from similar.
Put him among top players, refine his skills into a purer role and Liverpool might repeat the magic of the Wijnaldum transfer. Only, as we mentioned, with someone younger.
There is an awful lot of potential in Berge. Liverpool may be the right team to get it out of him, much as they’ve done before.
