Reportedly deep dig for a Liverpool centre-back pulls up £12m diamond

Liverpool are digging deep to find a new centre-back – if you believe numerous reports. They may have found a diamond, though.

We all know Liverpool want a centre-back. They pretty much have to sign one after this season.

Jurgen Klopp went into the season with three senior options but all picked up season-ending injuries by the halfway mark. It’s created chaos in the side and Liverpool must address it this summer.

Exactly how they go about that is up for debate. Do they sign an elite player for their XI? Maybe a young player to develop for the post-Virgil van Dijk era? Perhaps simply a fourth-choice squad option on the cheap?

All make sense. And the unobvious answer explains their apparently wide search.

Options galore

We’ll try and run through a few reported targets here. Il Mattino, for one, say Liverpool want Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Independent mentions them as wanting Ibrahima Konate. CalcioMercato believes they’ve asked about Nikola Milenkovic.

Then there the (at least) eight defenders they reportedly enquired about on transfer deadline day. There’s no reason to believe they don’t want them anymore.

Now, we’re sure some of these stories are false. That’s just the nature of transfer rumours – few of them turn out to be correct.

At the same time, we completely believe that Liverpool are looking at every possible opportunity for this summer. And we think they may have uncovered a diamond.

Further reports out of Italy claim they want £12m Chancel Mbemba. He seems like a fantastic third or fourth-choice option.

In a lot of ways, he’s the player Liverpool need. Low-risk, small fee, elite experience.

He’s just shone for Porto in the Champions League and if he’s really available for a fee that small, we wonder if this is the direction Liverpool will go.

Regardless, the Reds are casting a wide net. We’ve got to imagine, then, that they’ll end up with the right player in the end. Their transfer record suggests they usually get these chases right.
