Fabinho and Thiago in the midfield together again; a game changer

Liverpool have had a torrid time in the Premier League in the past few months. Jürgen Klopp’s side have slid down the table since Christmas Day, making a top four finish unlikely. Against RB Leipzig we saw Fabinho and Thiago in the midfield together for the first time since October and it was a game changer.

Poor Liverpool form

The Reds have looked out of ideas and have lacked intensity in recent months.

We’ve been leaking too many sloppy goals and we’ve been unable to score many of our own.

This has been down to injuries causing the gaffer to put out less than favourable lineups as he looks to paper over cracks in the side.

One of the decisions Klopp made was deploying Fabinho at centre back, an obvious call given his defensive prowess.

However, we missed his presence from the midfield.

Fabinho and Thiago start together again

This week Liverpool progressed to the quarter finals of the Champions League.

Jürgen Klopp’s side were in fine form as they beat RB Leipzig 2-0 at the Puskas Arena.

One of the headlines from the game was Fabinho and Thiago starting in midfield together for the first time since October.

In the Merseyside Derby we saw long term injuries suffered by both the Spaniard and Virgil van Dijk.

This meant that Thiago missed Fabinho’s last game in midfield against Atalanta and the Brazilian was dragged into the centre of defence by the time the playmaker returned.

Game changer

Having Fabinho and Thiago together in the middle proved a game changer.

The Brazilian freed his teammate to play further up the pitch and to be braver in his play.

We saw Thiago skipping past players, we saw more ambition in his passing.

The fact that Fabinho was winning the ball back also provided the Spaniard with opportunities to find teammates on the counter.

The pair being back together in the middle could prove crucial to the rest of our season.
