It’s no secret that Liverpool have been linked to Lille striker Jonathan David in the past.
The Athletic reported back in the summer that the Reds had an attacking shortlist which featured the Brooklyn-born centre forward.
Instead, Liverpool chose to focus their attention on landing Diogo Jota from Wolves. The 24-year-old made the switch from Molineux to Anfield in a £45 million deal.
Ismaila Sarr, too, was also on the list of potential targets, with the Watford attacker also touted with a switch to Merseyside back in January.
So, it’s become clear, then, that Liverpool still continue to monitor and track potential targets even after making the decision to look elsewhere in the market.
This makes the transfer saga regarding David all the more interesting, especially in the aftermath of comments made by James Pearce.
The Athletic’s Liverpool reporter believes that Jurgen Klopp could move for the Canadian international, when asked about potential targets during a Q&A with David Ornstein.
Speaking on the Ask Ornstein podcast, Pearce said: “Jonathan David is an interesting one in the fact that we know that he was on the three man shortlist that Liverpool had drawn up for an attacker last summer, when ultimately they decided to pursue the deal for Diogo Jota. Obviously Sarr at Watford for the other one.”
One to watch
Now, this is certainly a transfer saga to note, especially if Pearce deems there to be interest from Liverpool’s perspective.
At 21, David is still very-much a player in the development stages of his career. He could, then, be a valuable purchase from Liverpool’s perspective in terms of financial longevity.
He is enjoying a fine season, too, during his inaugural campaign in the French top-flight.
With nine goals in 28 Ligue matches this term, David is locked in an enthralling title race with Paris Saint Germain and Lyon.
In fact, Lille, who are currently under the tutelage of Christophe Galtier, are leading the way in France – two points clear of Mauricio Pochettino.
Les Dogues have lost just two league matches all season and are closing in on their first title since 2010.
This is a breakout season for David, who signed for Lille last summer for a fee of £27 million [Goal]. He most recently scored an impressive brace in an impressive 2-0 victory over Marseille on Wednesday night.
Liverpool need a striker
It has been evident this season that Liverpool need an extra punch up-front with Roberto Firmino struggling for goals. He has just six goals in 36 matches this season and certainly needs to improve between now and the end of the season.
Divock Origi has just one goal to his name all season, too, and that came in a 7-2 win against League One side Lincoln City. It looks like Liverpool could look to sell the Anfield icon this summer.
David, then, could be seen as a viable attacking alternative. He is a younger option with a lot of potential who would cost nothing like the astronomical sums being touted to land either Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe.
So, the question that remains is will Liverpool move for David in the future.
Well, Pearce certainly thinks that Klopp retains an interest in the 12-time Canada international.
At the moment, though, this is all just speculation. Liverpool’s transfer plans are still in the formulating stage and a lot could change between now and the end of the season.
David stands out as a reasonably priced strike option with bags of potential. A future move could hinge on the budget Liverpool are given to attacking alternatives to the club’s pedigreed front-three.
