Aissa Mandi history makes him a very appealing target for Liverpool

Aissa Mandi has a history that makes him a very appealing target for Liverpool. The Reds reportedly want the player.

Liverpool need to sign a defender this summer. Exactly who and what that defender should be is the tricky part.

The club will still have three elite defenders next season, after all. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip will be back.

So who should the fourth be? Should Liverpool splash some cash on a first-choice player? They’d cost a fortune but strengthen the team.

Maybe youth is the answer? Someone to act as a long-term option who isn’t necessarily first-choice now. For us, that is the answer – if Liverpool find the right player.

That defender may not be about. And in that case, there’s a fourth option – someone to tide them over. A defender who can come in with no expectations of starting but cover the it-turns-out-very-real worst-case scenario of everyone getting injured.

Effectively, they replace Dejan Lovren of last season

Well, Aissa Mandi might be that player and his history suggests he’s a good choice.

Aissa Mandi

If Liverpool just want a backup player, Mandi is incredibly appealing. La Razon claims the Reds want him on a free transfer.

Now, we’ve already covered how such a deal could save the club £18m. That’s certainly appealing in its own right.

But there’s more – Mandi has an injury history that looks near-perfect.

Per Transfermarkt, the Real Betis defender hasn’t had an injury since April 2017. Can you imagine such a thing? A centre-back with no injury problems.

That essentially makes Mandi exactly what Liverpool want as a short-term option. He’s free, has years of experience in a top European league, no real injury history, and again, he’s free.

Liverpool could count on him to slot right in as a reliable squad option. Then they can push their centre-back hunt back a year and focus on other areas this summer.

Sounds good to us.
