Michael Owen doesn’t doubt the talent in Thiago – but he remains unsure on the player. He tried to answer a difficult question.
What a whirlwind reputation Thiago has. One minute, he’s the signing of the season before he’s kicked the ball. The next, he might not get in Liverpool’s team.
Michael Owen addressed this on Sunday after the Reds beat Sheffield United 2-0.
Now, Owen certainly loves Thiago. He labelled him ‘unbelievable’ back in December after a 17-minute cameo.
The Spaniard has played a lot more since then, though – a period coinciding with terrible Liverpool form. So where does that put Thiago?

“The hardest thing I feel watching [Thiago] is that he’s got more talent in his little finger than virtually every midfielder in that team,” Owen told Premier League Productions.
“He’s so talented. He’s one of the most talented in the world, yet we are saying if it was a big game tomorrow, would you play him?
“And I think your general answer is you would probably go with your [Jordan] Hendersons, Fabinhos and [Georginio] Wijnaldums.”
What RTK has to say
Honestly, we just hope this is a scenario that comes up. It would mean Liverpool have a massive game to play and that all four first-choice midfielders are fit for once.
As for our own answer to the question – we have no idea. It’s a really difficult one to call.
On the one hand, it makes absolute sense to go with the midfield that took Liverpool to such glory over the last few years. On the other, it’s Thiago and we imagine he’ll look a lot better in the Reds’ best midfield.
We’d probably lean towards seeing what Fabinho, Henderson and Thiago could do. It’s a midfield that just sounds perfect on paper, yet we only saw it once – against Everton on October 17th.
And if everyone was fit for a massive game, we’d feel very comfortable lining up with those three.
