Jurgen Klopp sees at least one reason for hope at Liverpool. The Reds have got off to a terrible start in 2021.
Four home defeats on the bounce, two Premier League wins in 2021. This year isn’t going well.
Liverpool have slid down the table to sixth – a long way, considering they were top at Christmas. Things don’t look like turning around, either.
The Reds can’t beat top teams nor small teams. Nothing seems to work, no matter what Jurgen Klopp tries.
Still, Klopp does see at least one reason for hope right now.
“It is all about results,” he said, per the BBC. “The table doesn’t lie. Never. That is completely fine. We know that performance-wise we are not that far away, but results-wise we are.
“That is what we have to change and for all the different reasons that it was a difficult season so far for us.
“We try with all we have to sort it and while you try and sort one problem another problem occurs. That is in a season when it is not going perfect, obviously.”

It’s encouraging that Klopp believes Liverpool aren’t ‘far away’ performance wise, even if we don’t necessarily see that ourselves. It suggests he at least sees a simple enough fix.
Perhaps the Everton defeat is a good example, though. Liverpool weren’t actually terrible in that fixture. The problem was that no one stepped up to be great.
Maybe that’s what he means, then. Liverpool aren’t far away, they’re just missing a key ingredient.
Players need to consistently step up and affect games, which is something we just haven’t seen recently. Mohamed Salah has done it more than anyone but the team relies on him on far too many occasions.
That’s the big change we want to see. More consistently good performances form game-changing players. If that happens, then we agree with Klopp. Things aren’t too far away from looking good again.
