Three key Liverpool contracts would all expire at once if the Reds’ latest offer is accepted. We could see a lot of change before long.

AS claims that Liverpool hope to tie Gini Wijnaldum down to another contract. An offer with a substantial pay rise is on that table – he just needs to sign it.

Intriguingly, it’s a three-year contract. We did wonder what Liverpool would offer, given Wijnaldum’s age. He’s now in his 30s and we didn’t expect a five-year contract.

This would take him up to 33 and expire in 2024. And that latter note is particularly striking.

Striking

Jurgen Klopp’s contract also expires in 2024. He signed it back in December 2019 and we have no reason to believe he’ll sign a new one.

The offer to Wijnaldum, then, would line him up with Klopp. That doesn’t feel coincidental. It sounds as though Liverpool are deliberately signing him to be a part of the Klopp era and then move him on.

Wijnaldum would be an ageing star for the next manager – and that’s not usually ideal. It’s a move that guarantees change and easily opens up a squad spot for the new guy’s rebuild.

What’s interesting, though, is that Thiago also has a contract until 2024. He only joined ahead of this season and Liverpool tied him down in line with Klopp’s contract.

Now they’re apparently trying to do the same with Wijnaldum.

It appears to us that Liverpool will have a significant break after Klopp. Their ageing players are only at the club until he leaves, with no burden on the next manager, whoever that may be.

Really, it’s a smart strategy. There are always reservations over long-term contracts for players in their 30s at every club. But with Klopp’s contract expiry, the club have an ‘end date’ for the current squad.

Liverpool seem happy to have multiple contracts expire at once and this is the only way we see that making sense. In three years’ time, there are going to be big changes.
