Liverpool have had a woeful season in the Premier League. The Reds have had to deal with an unprecedented injury crisis as they looked to defend the title for the first time in 30 years. As a result there’s only one competition the side have a chance of winning. Sadio Mane has said the Champions League is the ‘main main main target’ for Liverpool this season.
Disappointing domestic campaign
Jürgen Klopp has had his hands tied this season.
The boss has lost his entire centre back roster to injury and as a result his midfield has been weakened with key players drafted into the back four.
The litany of injuries have taken their toll, leaving the Reds well adrift of league leaders Man City.
Four losses on the bounce at home has summed up the side’s problems.
Sadio Mane on Champions League
The Reds are still going strong in Europe.
Jürgen Klopp’s men ran out 2-0 winners against RB Leipzig in the first leg of their last 16 tie.
Speaking in an interview with ESPN Brazil, Sadio Mane has said the Champions League is the club’s focus:
“Our target from the beginning was [winning] the Champions League, the Premier League and also cup games. And now, I can say it’s over for the Premier League … it’s too much.
“In our head, our self-belief, it’s always ‘never give up’, and we won’t give up, but for sure, Manchester [City] are a good team and they’re flying.”
“Beyond the top four is now, right now, our main target. But the Champions League, that is our main, main, main target. To win it, not be second, but it won’t be easy.”
What RTK has to say
You can’t write these Reds off.
Sadio Mane could well go out and win us the Champions League despite our domestic woes.
We’ve finished outside the top four and won the European Cup before, they rewrote the rule book for us after that.
This is our competition, as long as we’re in it then anything is possible.
