Liverpool have their eyes on Matthew Hoppe, according to reports. The Reds like what they see from the American.
This comes from 90min. They claim that Liverpool have their scouts monitoring Matthew Hoppe after he broke into the Schalke first-team this season.
They’re ‘very impressed’ with what they’re seeing, too. But there’s a catch – there’s always a catch.
Liverpool are just one of a number of Premier League clubs looking at Hoppe. Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all have their scouts doing the same thing.
What RTK has to say
We imagine you’re asking ‘who?’ as Hoppe is far from a big name. This is his debut senior season, after all, with just 777 minutes to go off.
Well, Hoppe is a 19-year-old American striker. He shot to prominence in the Bundesliga by firing Schalke to their first win this season.
It was just Hoppe’s third start when he bagged a hat-trick in a 4-0 win. You’ve got to be impressed with that.
Even better, Hoppe scored in each of his next starts, too. That’s five in just three games.
The ‘worry’, though, is that the hat-trick greatly inflates Hoppe’s record. Take that out and you’re looking at two goals in 10 games.
That’s not bad for a young player, admittedly.
What asks a bigger question is that in his six games since the hat-trick, Hoppe has had four shots – total. They all came in separate games, too, and despite the striker playing at least 72 minutes in each appearance.
But then, Schalke are awful – we can’t judge him too harshly.
Hoppe is certainly one to keep an eye on. We’re not exactly talking an Erling Haaland-like explosion here, though.
Liverpool will likely continue to monitor him for some time, then. The start is encouraging but there’s a way to go.
