Ibrahima Konate is as ideal an alternative as Liverpool will find after their reported transfer failure. The defender could have a bright future.
The Independent recently claimed that Liverpool want Ibrahima Konate this summer. That comes a little over a week after the Mirror suggested the Reds had already let RB Leipzig know of their interest.
This is all especially relevant as Liverpool won’t be getting Konate’s teammate Dayot Upamecano. We’d had links between the two for a while, such as this from the Guardian last week.
Liverpool were reportedly gearing up for a summer assault on the player. His £37m release clause, after all, was very tempting.
But now we know he will join Bayern Munich. Liverpool will have to move on and find almost certainly inferior target.
In Konate, though, Liverpool may have a shot at the next-best thing.
Konate is roughly the same age as Upamecano but doesn’t have the same experience or proven quality. A lot of that is down to injuries.
Konate has missed a lot of games with various problems and it’s certainly a red flag. If Liverpool believe it’s not a problem, though, they have their Upamecano alternative.
We’re talking about a player who plays in the exact same defence, after all. Both can defend in roughly the same way, both have similar development history, and both are in the same age group.
The only real difference is that Konate is more of a risk and a little less proven. But if Liverpool seek someone in Upamecano’s profile, Konate is a remarkably similar fit.
We imagine Liverpool will sound RB Leipzig out about Konate, then. No, he wouldn’t be the signing Upamecano could have been.
But he is undoubtedly the most natural alternative.
