Report: Man United prioritise Liverpool target Ibrahima Konate

Man United want Ibrahima Konate, according to reports. This comes after a string of suggestions that Liverpool love the player.

We’ve been following reports that Liverpool like Ibrahima Konate for some time. Two months ago, in fact, Bild’s Christian Falk claimed the Reds liked him.

That led to Bild claiming that Liverpool knew of Konate’s release clause – at least £36m.

The New York Times’ Rory Smith suggested Liverpool wanted him, too.

“I think Liverpool intend to sign a centre-back in the summer and I think that central defender is probably someone they will play against in the Champions League’s Last 16. And I don’t think it’s going to be Dayot Upamecano,” he told the Guardian’s Football Weekly.

Liverpool face RB Leipzig in the last 16, of course, and Konate is their ‘other’ defender.

Finally, in the final days of the transfer window, the Mirror made a claim. They said Liverpool had contacted RB Leipzig over Konate and declared their ‘firm interest’.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

It really does sound as though Liverpool want the defender this summer, then. But they’ll have to put up a fight.

The Independent says that Man United have Konate as their main centre-back target – a position their prioritising for reinforcements.

The same report mentions Liverpool and Chelsea as wanting Konate.

What RTK has to say

Bild say that Liverpool are still in the race for Dayot Upamecano. Honestly, we’d be thrilled with either.

Both Upamecano and Konate look like special talents and are young enough to have long careers at wherever they end up. If Liverpool want both, we’ve got to fancy their chances at getting one.

We do think they may just prefer Konate a little, though.

But perhaps it all depends on Ozan Kabak. He’s already here, after all – albeit only on loan. If he performs well, Liverpool may just decide to make things permanent and rule out further moves.

Really, that’s ideal. He’d already be integrated in things and making the signing permanent suggests Liverpool like him a lot.

But until he proves himself, you can imagine Liverpool will keep their eyes on other targets. Those targets appear to be Upamecano and Konate.

The only real certainty is that whoever Liverpool choose, they’ll face a fight.
