There are now just three competitors in the Dayot Upamecano race, according to one journalist. Liverpool remain in contention.
The race for Dayot Upamecano is approaching the finish line but we’re not quite there yet. That won’t be until shortly after the season ends and teams can activate his £39m release clause.
Still, we’re apparently at the point where it’s becoming obvious who could actually win this race.
Bild’s Christian Falk claims there are only three real contenders – Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool.
They will each try and sway Upamecano’s opinion over the next few months, then. After all, he’s the only one you have to convince. RB Leipzig don’t have a say.

What RTK has to say
We’d be surprised if Liverpool lost out to Chelsea. Then again, perhaps they’ll prove to be less possessive of their money once again and offer a financial package that the Reds can’t.
Bayern, though, as a huge threat. In fact, they’re overwhelming favourites on this one. They offer guaranteed success and an obvious first XI place – Liverpool can’t quite match that.
Bayern win the Bundesliga every year, Liverpool can’t win the Premier League every year. The Bavarians’ Champions League win will entice players, too, so Liverpool can’t play their ‘recent champions of Europe’ card.
We’re also a little worried about Upamecano being a left-sided centre-back. That, after all, is where Virgil van Dijk favours.
But perhaps that’s not a big deal. Liverpool appear to see a future with both. this we should, too.
Still, Upamecano can be the top defender at Bayern and Liverpool certainly can’t offer that with Van Dijk around. Perhaps it’s a small thing but it weighs in Bayern’s favour.
Of course, we believe Liverpool can win this race. Bayern, though, offer a wonderful destination for any player, particularly those already in Germany.
